Among the brick and mortar
of a city like Baltimore.
I can see the read and gold
Illuminated leaves flicking like
turning pages of a manuscript.
To speak like Monet is to
Tell stories of light, recognizing
how new each different moment.
See this in the trees when I glance,
Searching for concrete and some
ground where to cement myself.
Flying away is not like leaving
Far from home, but also not as
returning, or settling on land.
The fire of even the sun won’t
revive the phoenix today
But it will shine on me.

My mom opens the windows.
She lets the new breeze
Carry her curtains like
It does to the brown
Leaves of her plants outside.
The room's too stuffy,
That's what she told me.
I never noticed until she
Said so because I was
Always just comfortable.
Now there are too many
Cute scarves and coats
Walking down the sidewalks.
Until now they were
Taking up space in tiny
Little closets wanting air.
Today my mother's curtains
Have their breeze and scarves
Their breathing room, and I
Wonder if my bedroom that
Isn't mine anymore is comfortable
Or stuffy.

and all the in-betweens

Crosswalks parallel
and perpendicular present
chance and progress at
every street corner.
Stand beneath the lamps
and let light chase
away the shadows; swat
whatever moths may gather.
Passers-by go and a shoulder
bumps into
